Linguistics

Linguistics is the study of how language works.  My first masters degree is an M.A. in Linguistics from Indiana University (Bloomington) in 1999.  The reasons I don't have a Ph.D. in the field are long and complicated, and I won't go into them here, but suffice it to say that I may still return to it someday.  I've always enjoyed learning about languages, but just not as much as astronomy. :)  But the whole point of lifelong learning is that there is never really an end, just "what's next?"

Included here are some papers I wrote while in graduate school, as well as a series of links pages below on the major fields within theoretical linguistics (sorry, applied people!).

The major content area in this section of my website is my Luo page.

Research & Papers:

This is hardly a complete list, but a handful of my papers are here.  I may add more as they are written, or as I dig them out of my archives. Often, I wrote papers because I had to for class, and so some of the topics aren't exactly my first choice.  And I probably got some grumpiness from the faculty for not responding to their "prompting" in quite the way they hoped.  But by far, the languages I did the most work on were Greek and Japanese, and some Luo due to the yearlong Field Methods course I took in my second year.  What might have happened had I remained in the field... well, I guess we may never know.
