Giftedness & the Gifted

Gifted Kids

I grew up gifted.  My school had neither the resources nor the experience to really know what to do with me.  People are starting to come around to the idea that the gifted need more than just the expectation that 'they'll do fine' if left to their own devices.  Parents need to be proactive and fight to make sure their children get the attention and challenge they deserve.

It should be noted that parents who think their kids are gifted should push to get their kids tests.  BUT, parents must also be aware that most kids are not gifted relative to their peers.  Kids will all have special talents at which they excel ahead of others, and all kids should be encouraged to pursue and excel at those things.  These children may always be at the top of their class, but do not need more than supplementary work in their area of gift.  Do not be offended if your child doesn't make it into the gifted program.  Use the resources here to help your child, and don't be afraid to try again after a time.

The profoundly gifted who need specialized courses or treatment are frequently gifted in more than one area, or are significantly, indeed severely ahead of where their peers are.  As an example, I started talking at 5-1/2 months, and was walking at 7-1/2 months... that kind of profoundly gifted.  For these children, parents should push back against educators who resist treating their child as gifted hard.  Few parents will face such a problem, but for those that do, you are your child's only advocate.  Their children will rot in a standard curriculum.

As with everything, there is a range of giftedness. The best tool we have is the IQ test.  These tests don't predict success in life, not as much as hard work and other factors, but they are quite good at predicting success in school.  Be realistic and listen to what these tests say.
