Personal Interests Giftedness & the Gifted High IQ Societies
I joined Mensa when I was 15. I didn't go to events often, but at that time I really needed to feel like I belonged, and so I remained a member. I followed a couple special interest groups, but when I came to Columbus I got more involved and am in my second year as President of the Columbus chapter. The Triple Nine Society was a different issue. I joined TNS on the basis of my GRE scores mostly because my advisor called me into his office and told me I was too stupid to remain in mathematics. I don't know, what do you think? Mensa
Triple Nine Society While Mensa and TNS are the two high IQ societies that I belong to, there are many others. Why join a high IQ society? Well, each person is different. I needed a sense of belonging, and to prove my "worthiness" in the face of the doubt of someone supposed to be supporting me. Which one will you join, depends on you, and which one you can score high enough to get into. Top 1%
Society There are others, but this is a good spread of levels. For a more complete list visit High IQ society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia You'll notice from the list on this site that there
are a lot of high IQ societies. It has been suggested to me
that there are so many of them because of the internal politics.
People with exceptionally high intelligence are sometimes poorly
socialized--so the argument goes--and while they need to reach out to others
like themselves, they are not able to work together, so the societies
fracture. It's possible that some of this plays a role, but it's also
true that many of the societies have different foci... some of them have
more intellectual bents, some are more social. You may wish to
research the society you're interested in closely before you join, and if
you don't find what you like, try another. If you are looking for a
lot of social contact, and don't wish to just debate with people, Mensa is a
good bet. The smaller ones thrive on the Internet, and there is
nothing that says you just can join one... if you make the grade that is.
