Lifelong Learning Astronomy Carl Sagan Links
I don't really remember astronomy before Carl Sagan, nor Sagan before astronomy. They were always one and the same to me. I fell in love with astronomy in the second grade, around the same time that Cosmos was released on PBS. I almost met him once, in 1994; he was about five feet away at a black-tie dinner for a Planetary Society function in Washington, DC, an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Apollo moon landings, and also the crash of Shoemaker-Levy 9 into Jupiter. Few people intimidate me, but my hero worship was--is--really quite intense. And then two years later he was dead, dying the same day I mailed my applications for linguistics. I cried for hours and hours. It felt like I had betrayed him. I should have come to my senses then, but it would take another 10 years to come back to what I love most: astronomy.
