Lifelong Learning Linguistics (Dho-)Luo & Nilotic Languages Luo Verbs & Paradigms
On this page you will find links to information on Luo Verbs and Verb Paradigms. As I indicate in the note below, the information collected here is from a native speaker of Luo, and I can only report the usage as that speaker used it. We had a yearlong course with this speaker, and I did attempt to get a complete inflectional paradigm. However, in the limited time I had with her, I in no way gained fluency. Note: I received an email from a visitor to my site who
stated the following:
We lived in South Nyanza Kenya for 15
years and speak dhoLuo fluently. I looked at your website for the first
time today. I haven't read it all but I will say your indication of
future tense, abondiko is a contraction of the verb "abiro" (I come, or
I am coming (in English we'd say "going"), and the verbe ndiko. Another
way of making the future is anandik (which is the proper way of making
the future with the infix "na" and dropping the final "o". Just thought
you'd like to know.
Nyasaye ogwedhi!
I note the email mostly because it's impossible for me to verify or disprove the information, since I no longer have access to my informant for my data. It could also be a dialect variation that my informant didn't use. I don't know, but I include it here for the sake of completeness. Thanks Lawrence Barr for the info! The complete email is here.
