Mathematical Linguistics

Mathematical Linguistics is the study of how mathematical methods can be applied to the understanding of language.  Certainly, the possibilities are far more than can be reflected in the list of links below.  The most common current applications of math to language are statistical methods throughout the field (though this is favoured mostly by phoneticians and psycholinguists) and formal logic in semantics.  However, much more is possible, with new probabilistic models developing in phonology, and differential equation modeling of historical change.  So much is possible and so little has been done.  While Phonology was my chosen field of study, mathematics is the tool I would like to bring to bear on that topic to deepen my understanding of it. My pursuit of a mathematical degree was fundamentally in a effort to pursue this topic.
