Log Cabin I

 

This afghan uses 3 skeins of colour A (dark grey), 4 skeins of colour B (dark green), 4 skeins of colour C (white), 4 skeins of colour D (light green), and 4 skeins of colour E (rust).  All of these were 6 oz. skeins.

Originally I saw an afghan with a similar pattern that I liked, but the directions were for knitting only, so I modified it and made my own for crochet.  This one is quite a bit bigger than the one I saw.

With Colour A, chain 42.

Row 1A. In 3rd ch from hook hdc and in each ch to end.  Ch 2, turn.

Row 2. Hdc in each stitch across. Ch 2, turn.

Row 3-30. Repeat Row 2. Fasten off. Should form square.

Row 31. With Colour B, join with slip stitch.  Ch 2.  Hdc in each stich across. Ch 2 turn.

Row 32-35. Hdc in each stitch across.  Ch 2 at end before turning in rows 32-34.  Fasten off and switch to Colour C.

Row 36-40.  Repeat Row 31-35.  Switch to Colour A.

Row 41-45.  Repeat Row 31-35.  Switch to Colour D.

Row 46-50.  Repeat Row 31-35.  Switch to Colour E.

Row 51-55.  Repeat Row 31-35.  Switch to Colour B.

Row 56-60.  Repeat Row 31-35.  Fasten off.

Repeat Rows 31-60 on opposite side of square.  At end of Row 60, Ch 2 and turn 90-degrees.

Row 1B.  In every 4 stitches, 5 hdcs across to end.  Ch 2, turn.

Row 2-6. Hdc in each stitch across. Ch 2, turn.  At end of Row 6, fasten off and change to Colour E.

Row 7.  Join slip stitch, Ch 2.  Hdc in each stitch across.  Ch 2, turn.

Row 8-12.  Repeat Row 3-6.  Change to Colour D.

Row 13-18.  Repeat Rows 7-12.  Change to Colour A.

Row 19-24.  Repeat Rows 7-12.  Change to Colour C.

Row 25-30.  Repeat Rows 7-12.  Repeat sequence on opposite side of square at end of Row 30, Ch 2, and turn 90-degrees.

Row 1C.  In each 4 rows of stitches, 5 hdc, then hdc in each hdc across from previous row.  5 hdc in each 4 rows to end.  Ch 2, turn.

Row 2.  Hdc in each stitch across.  Ch 2, turn.

Row 3-4.  Repeat Row 2.  Repeat sequence on opposite side.  Fasten off and change to Colour D.  Turn 90-degrees.

Row 1D. Repeat previous Row 1C.  Ch 2, turn.

Row 2. Hdc in each stitch across. Ch 2, turn.

Row 3-8.  Repeat Row 2.

Repeat sequence of 2 sets of 4 rows followed by 1 set of 8 rows on 90-degree sides in the following sequence: 4E, 4D, 8B, 4A, 4B, 8E, 4C, 4E, 8C, 4B, 4C.  With matching patterns on opposite sides before changing colours out.

Edge Round. Ch 2, hdc across. 2 hdc, Ch 1, 2 hdc in each corner all the way around.  Fasten off.
