Personal Interests Giftedness & the Gifted Gifted Adults
If you are a gifted adult, you don't need anyone to tell you that being gifted and being different doesn't end with growing up. The experiences of our childhoods were different than everyone else's because of our unique situations, and we continue to be gifted and excel in ways those around us can't, continuing our different way of experiencing life. 'Normal' people often fail to understand us... and if you are like me, even communicating with family can be difficult, as though we didn't really speak the same language. This page is designed to provide resources to gifted adults like me, and maybe you... how to understand ourselves better and how best to use our different experiences to improve the lives of others. You may also find the list of links for Gifted Kids helpful and of interest too. Welcome to the Gifted Development Center Online NewsHour: Extraordinary Minds - Forum -- September 17, 1997
While the programs to deal with gifted kids aren't nearly adequate, at least there is some small recognition of a need. But as adults, we are again left to our own resources. And unless you are in a field filled with other highly gifted people (like maybe academia), you are often surrounded by "normal" people who don't quite understand you. It's important to reach out to gifted communities online or groups in the area so that you don't feel alone and have people around you to bounce ideas off of. This is not about being "better" than others. That is a value judgment, and includes more than just intellectual gifts. We think faster, we remember more, we think differently. And my experience tells me there is a lot I can't do with my brains. I don't related to "normal" people as well as others. I can be impatient. I don't do mindless work very well. But it takes all types to make society work. If you have to keep watch over a camp fire, the morning person is just as important as the night owl if you don't want to get eaten by wolves. Don't ever be ashamed to be good at something other people aren't.
