Lifelong Learning Linguistics Historical/Diachronic Linguistics
Historical Linguistics is the study of how languages change over time and the interrelationship of languages. Historical linguistics can be studied from many perspectives. Phonological and semantic perspectives are most common, but syntactic perspectives are a growing force in the field. Etymologies of words are often the product of historical linguistics research. Historical linguistics was the first of the linguistic subfields to develop a clear methodological approach to their study, and it is the necessities of early historical work that imposed a lot of stereotypes on the field in general--those geniuses that know a dozen languages, for instance are not the general rule, but were often necessary for comparing and recreating ancestor languages. Historical linguistics is also distinguished from other linguistic fields by being diachronic (through time) vs. synchronic (with/in time). Historical linguistics is also closely related to sociolinguistics which looks at processes of change which are ongoing rather than change which has been completed. For a paper I wrote on historical syntax as well as another on Proto-Greek, you can go to my published papers page and/or my main linguistics page. I don't usually do true historical linguistics, but since I do enjoy working with Classical Greek, I often get stuck into this category by the uninformed.
